About Us

Created by Dee Sewell, Greenside Up is based near Old Leighlin in County Carlow.

Dee and her husband Ian have been growing fruit and vegetables for their family for several years, extending their own garden to include many individual fruit and vegetable beds and a polytunnel.

Dee is a qualified horticulturist and trainer whilst Ian is an experienced and qualified arboriculturist who specialises in all types of trees.

Over the years Dee realised there was very little help available to new gardeners and in particular those wishing to grow their own and feel it’s a life skill that’s being lost. Dee’s therefore keen to share her expertise and knowledge with others.

What does the green mean in Greenside Up?

A commitment to recognise the importance of protecting our environment, and helping others do likewise, is an integral part of the Greenside Up business ethos.

Without compromising on customer service, all course notes are initially offered by electronic mail and in the event that we have to print, we endeavour to use paper that has been sourced from sustainable forests or recycled.

We actively promote vegetable gardening without the use of artificial chemicals, and positively encourage wildlife into gardens.

We encourage and advise customers on how to reduce their landfill, to stop food waste by composting and recycling. As well as growing vegetables we educate them on beneficial insects, biodiversity, companion planting, the impact of using peat and genetically modified organisms amongst other things.

We try to practice what we preach – we’re not perfect but we do our best.

Our Garden

“I recently attended a beginners workshop with Dee. Needing a basic guide to starting a home garden, we were reassured by her easy manner and the jargon free language. She introduced us to the basics of soil, plants, light and shade and shared some of her own gardening successes and failures. This workshop gave me the confidence to start digging!” M O Higgins, Carlow.
